PRELIMINARY STUDY

This study evaluates the conversion potential of the 16 existing aquariums in the Istanbul venue. Tank-by-tank suitability, dimensions and the final species selection are confirmed at the site survey. Technical project documents follow from that survey.

TERRARIUM & PALUDARIUM CONVERSION — PRELIMINARY STUDY

The conversion of the existing aquariums into display habitats for a range of terrestrial and semi-aquatic animals will be addressed by evaluating animal welfare, visitor experience and sustainable operation together.

SUSTAINABLE OPERATION

SIXTEEN AQUARIUMS BECOME LAND AND WATER habitats.

Each tank becomes a land or land-and-water habitat, planted and climate-controlled for the species it carries. The collection gains display range the aquariums cannot reach and a maintenance rhythm the team already runs. The tank-by-tank survey sets the order of work and the schedule.

TERRESTRIALS
PROJECT APPROACH
03
Terrarium + paludarium in one volume — habitat reference, licence recorded in assets/ledger.json

ONE VOLUME, TWO systems.

TERRARIUM

A land habitat inside the tank: soil, planting and hardscape in place of open water.

PALUDARIUM

The same habitat with a water section held at a fixed level, and a bank between them.

TOGETHER

One volume holds a shoreline. Air, land and water share a climate; the animals move across all three.

TERRESTRIALS
OVERVIEW OF TERRARIUM & PALUDARIUM SYSTEMS
04

What changes when the water leaves the tank.

HEAT / HUMIDITY

Heat & humidity — habitat reference, licence recorded in assets/ledger.json

Heat and humidity are held habitat by habitat instead of by one shared water temperature, so no tank constrains its neighbours. Misting can run automatically, holding humidity between staff visits, so the daily round is observation, not adjustment; monitoring raises a fault as an alert rather than at the next check. You decide what is shared and what is per-habitat; per-habitat control widens the species range and adds monitoring points.

LIGHTING / UV

Lighting & UV — habitat reference, licence recorded in assets/ledger.json

Lighting does two jobs a display aquarium never asks of it: it carries the daylight rhythm and, for several species, the ultraviolet component their health depends on, and it lights the habitat for the visitor. Because day length is set rather than judged, staff observe the lighting instead of adjusting it. You decide whether habitat lighting also lights the room; shared lighting constrains the daily rhythm.

PLANTING

Planting — habitat reference, licence recorded in assets/ledger.json

Live planting is what makes the volume a habitat rather than a display case: it gives cover, climbing surface and humidity, and it is most of what the visitor actually sees. It is also work the aquarium did not have. Planting matures over months, so a pruning and replanting round enters the calendar as seasonal work. Planting density is yours to set; visitors see the choice from day one.

SUBSTRATE

Substrate — habitat reference, licence recorded in assets/ledger.json

Substrate stops being decoration and becomes a working layer: it holds moisture, supports the planting, and is where waste and leaf litter break down. Cleaning moves off the water-change cycle and onto spot cleaning between periodic renewals of the layer itself. You decide how deep and how planted the layer is, which sets how often it is renewed and how much of the floor the animal can work.

BEHAVIOURAL ZONES

Behavioural zones — habitat reference, licence recorded in assets/ledger.json

A terrestrial habitat is used in three dimensions, so it is laid out as zones rather than as one open floor: perches and climbing routes above, a basking position, cover to retreat into, and a feeding place away from both. Zoning is what keeps the animal visible without crowding it, because it can choose distance instead of hiding. You decide how much of the volume is given to cover.

WATER MANAGEMENT

FOR SPECIES THAT NEED A WATER SECTION

Water management — habitat reference, licence recorded in assets/ledger.json

Only the habitats whose species need one carry a water section, so circulation and filtration enter the week for those tanks alone; the land side of the same habitat keeps its own separate care. Nothing here is a client decision: which habitats hold water follows from the species selection.

AQUARIUM / TERRARIUM / PALUDARIUM COMPARISON
mangrove / water edge — habitat reference, licence recorded in assets/ledger.json

OPERATIONS PERSPECTIVE

THREE DECISIONS THAT SHAPE YOUR OPERATION.

01

AUTOMATION LEVEL

ADVANTAGE

Monitoring reports condition continuously, so problems surface as alerts instead of at the next manual check.

OPERATIONAL IMPACT

You choose the automation level: more automation lowers daily load and raises the technical monitoring you commission.

02

LIVE-PLANTING DENSITY

ADVANTAGE

Mature planting is what a visitor notices first, and it is the part of the habitat that keeps improving after handover.

OPERATIONAL IMPACT

You choose planting density; denser planting reads richer and lengthens the pruning round.

OPERATIONAL CONSIDERATIONS

  • Kept alone; this species does not share space.
  • Converted tanks suit it only after a suitability review.
  • Specialist veterinary support is recommended.
  • Shorter lifespan than most of the roster; renewal is planned.
  • Stress shows in colour; visitor traffic is considered.

THREE HABITAT CONCEPTS

The same animal and the same tank, composed three ways; the concepts differ in planting density and maintenance load.

terrarium concept A — dense layered planting — habitat reference, licence recorded in assets/ledger.json

Panther Chameleon · Concept A — Natural Habitat · arboreal terrarium in a converted display aquarium

A

NATURAL HABITAT

Natural-habitat feel and planting density come first.

Strongest natural appearance.

Plant / landscape maintenance may be relatively higher.

terrarium concept B — exhibition, open foreground and staged perch — habitat reference, licence recorded in assets/ledger.json

Panther Chameleon · Concept B — Exhibition Habitat · arboreal terrarium in a converted display aquarium

B

EXHIBITION HABITAT

Visitor visibility and display composition come first.

High display value.

Operation and visual quality are kept in balance.

terrarium concept C — robust hardscape, sparse durable planting — habitat reference, licence recorded in assets/ledger.json

Panther Chameleon · Concept C — Low-Maintenance Habitat · arboreal terrarium in a converted display aquarium

C

LOW-MAINTENANCE HABITAT

Natural look preserved while the maintenance load is kept more controlled.

Easier operation.

Landscape and maintenance intensity are relatively lower.
